I first began studying the BURROUGHS family of Newtown when I started the BURROUGHS DNA project a few years ago. Two of the earliest participants in the project were descendants of John BURROUGHS of Newtown, and his line was the first one to be identified using DNA.
I became even more interested in the family when I noticed all of the conflicting information floating around the Internet about the New Jersey branch. Descendants of John of Newtown settled in Hunterdon County New Jersey as well as across the Delaware River in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Descendants of the BURROWES family of Jamaica New York also settled in Hunterdon County. And there was an old BURROUGH family (usually no S) in nearby Gloucester County New Jersey. With so many families with similar names, a lot of incorrect information ended up on the Internet. I always enjoy a good genealogy puzzle and decided to try and sort out all of this New Jersey data. I eventually ended up studying all branches of the Newtown family, and this report is the result of my work.
The information presented here can be freely copied by genealogy researchers. Relationships or dates that are not definite should be labeled as such in databases and not represented as fact. A lot of data entry was involved in this project, and there are bound to be errors. Any corrections, additions, or comments would be greatly appreciated. With the help of others, I hope to make this the "bible" for research on the BURROUGHS family of Newtown.
